A photograph of a document is usually a trapezoid: the far edge is smaller than the near edge, and the text is skewed. Shrinking it into a rectangle helps a little, but the perspective inside the page is still wrong, which is why photographed documents read badly and look unconvincing when filed.
Mark the four corners of the page and the image is re-projected onto a true rectangle: the near edge is pulled back, the far edge is pushed out, and the result is what a flatbed scanner would have produced. The document is processed on your device — worth noting for a passport page or a contract.
Frequently asked questions
How accurately do I need to place the corners?
Within a millimetre or two on screen. The correction is a projection, so small errors are absorbed; a corner placed well inside the page, though, will crop the page edge off, so aim at the actual corners of the paper rather than at the text block.
Can it read text and make a searchable PDF?
No — this produces an image of a straightened page, not recognised text. Optical character recognition is a different job with a different cost, and claiming it here would mean shipping a model that is much larger than the whole rest of the site.
What about shadows and uneven lighting?
The correction includes a contrast pass that evens out a gradient, which handles the common case of a window on one side of the page. It does not remove a hard shadow or a finger across a corner; retake the photograph instead, and the result will be better than anything post-processing can do.
Is the document uploaded?
No. It is decoded, corrected and re-encoded on your device. Documents photographed for official purposes are exactly the ones that should not be sent to a stranger’s server to be straightened.
